update her record after our database manager found her on facebook. There are couple of Sydney IH facebook groups. Great place to find lost alumni.
Please remember us when you move or change your email address. Just go to Make Contact / Update SUIHAA.
Sharmani Rajasingham Perera (1989 1990) 8 Oct 2008
When the UK Reunion invitation sent to Sharmani was returned, we traced her via her email address. Now she has updated her address and introduced the database manager to the subtlety of the UK postcode.
Do remember to update your mailing address if you move. Invitation to events are usually sent by post. Some alumni missed the 40th Anniversary Event because of this.

Maria Josenia "Jojie" Bautro (1998 1999) 7 Oct 2008
Updated her record and left this Comments:
" Ten years after our memorable stay at IH, my family and I plan to attend the reunion next year on October/November 2009. My husband and I had a short visit to China and Hongkong but we were not able to get in touch with former IH residents. We hope we could be there in 2009, it's like coming back home, (I have always considered Australia a second home with all the beautiful memories and good people I met there.) I miss a lot of things about IH, even my kids' youth-they used to play at the inner court while I do the laundry. It's good to hear that the roof top has a garden and barbeque place now. We used to hang clothes in that area then, although I spend sunsets there to view the skyline and the city."

Brain Falzon (1993 1994 1995 1996) 6 Oct 2008

Brian was one of our alumni who were at the recent UK Reunion.

Tony Simons (1968 1969) 28 Aug 2008
wrote of his Northern Australian Adventure:
"In June 2008 Thelma and I undertook a long desired trip to Broome and the Kimberleys. We flew on the new direct five hour flight from wintry Sydney to balmy Broome teeming with birds and fish, pindan (red dirt) and turquoise waters. Thelma was pleased to see the early morning SBS Filipino news which seemed a fitting tribute to the Filipino pearlers, farmers and mission builders in north west Australia 100 years ago. There are remnants of a Filipino fish trap in Roebuck Bay. On historic Streeters wharf we met a nephew of playwright Jimmy Chi (of "Bran Nue Day", "Corrugation Road" plus work in progress) who gave us a history of Australia's first multiracial town with its hybrid Asian/Aborginal culture and Broome creole with many Malay words. Jimmy's family is a typical Broome resident with his Japanese, Chinese, French, English and aboriginal heritage. We also saw some of the one million live cattle being shipped through Broome and other northern ports to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Egypt each year. Broome has attractive tropical architecture which owes much to the Japanese influence in the use of white painted corrugated galvanised iron. It was sad to see many homeless aborigines camped in the sandhills next to our hotel. Many of these folk are refugees from the Northern Territory intervention one year ago. The Howard government "martial law" has caused an exodus to Queensland, WA and SA.
We joined a seven day camping tour along the rough 700 km gravel Gibb River road to Kununurra with a side trip to the very remote Mitchell Plateau. Wanjina Gorge with its spectacular 70 metre high ancient coral mountain was our first camp where we swam with the freshwater crocodiles (not dangerous unless threatened) in the beautiful Lennard River. Wonderful El Questro (named after a local Spanish jackeroo) campsite and luxury lodge certainly met our expectations. Other campsites included the very basic Mitchell Falls national park and one million acre Drysdale station oasis with its bamboos and mango trees. Kununurra was established 40 years ago to service the Ord River irrigation scheme and not withstanding its prosperity must be the ugliest Australian town that I have ever visited (think of Mt Druitt shopping plaza with a huge carpark as a town centre).
We took the one hour flight to Darwin with great views of the NT coast. Downtown Darwin is booming and almost entirely under 35 years old and with its brutal architecture has all the charm of Chatswood CBD (you must agree Mr De Graaf) but the green suburbs are very pleasant. We attended the celebrations for the opening of the harbourside Darwin Convention Centre descibed as pearl shaped but already referred to as the cockroach.
It was a nice holiday but we appreciated the return home to tranquil Bedlam Bay on Parramatta River with soft winter light and absence of grey nomads, backpackers and fire haze and vast dry savannah plains."

I plan to keep doing missions with MSF every year while I am fit and competent enough!
MSF will be putting on a project, "Refugee Camp in your city" during September, to demonstrate the sort of services that MSF provides.
I will be working as guide with the camp in central Sydney (Martin Place) from 13th Sept - it would be great if you could publicise the camp! Details and an interactive preview are available at the msf website, www.msf.org.au click on Refugee Camp in your city"

Cathy (Cui Xia) Lu (2003 2004 2005 2006)
emailed us recently with the following:
"What exactly am I doing? Well I am working in the back office
(Treasury operations) in the Royal Bank of Scotland, Singapore. Our
team supports the Foreign Exchange and Money Market (interbank
borrowings and lendings) transactions of RBS London. We confirm and
settle deals done by our dealers around the world, so long as they
trade in the name of RBS London. Our team is called the Interbank
team, so all our clients are banks. Banks are tend to be more
sophisticated than other financial instituations and corporation and
are actively involved in foreign exchange and money markets. Because
of this active involvement the trade volume and the magnitude of the
trades are larger than those of teams which take care of corporate and
financial institution clients. As a result the work pace of our team
is relatively faster and more demanding.
Time goes by very fast - it has been a year since I joined RBS. Now I
can cope with my job much better than I did a year ago. I was
recently appointed trainer of the 2 new members of our team. It is
not a big achievement, but I feel that I am being recognised.
By the way, I am including some photos taken of our company's annual
dinner dance. I hope you will like them.
Take care!
Cathy"

Jill Harmon & Runi Vilhelm (1999) emailed us recently:
" We have been meaning to write for several years and some how, time has gotten away from us everytime.
Can you include the update below in the next International House Newsletter! Thanks so much! We really appreciate it.
Runi Vilhelm (from the Faroe Islands, Denmark) and Jill Harmon (from Tallahassee, Florida) were residents of the International House in 1999. That year, Runi and Jill began dating and fell in love. Of course, when the year was over, we had to go our separate ways, Runi back to the Faroe Islands and Jill back to Gainesville, Florida to finish law school. After law school in 2000, Jill moved to Orlando to begin practicing law with the Lowndes law firm in Orlando, Florida, where she recently became a partner and shareholder. After about 3 years of dating very long distance, Runi found a company to sponsor him to work in the US in Tampa, Florida (about 1 1/2 hours from Orlando). We were again long distance dating, but this time it was only a 1 1/2 hour drive instead of hours of overseas flying. We got engaged in April 2004, bought a house in Orlando in February 2005 and were married in St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands) in April 2005. Our first child, Austin was born March 7, 2007. Austin was baptised in the only Catholic Church in the Faroe Islands in October 2007 and we recently celebrated his 1st Birthday in Orlando, Florida where we still live. We have attached a picture from our wedding and a picture of our son, Austin, to share with our friends of the International House Class of 1999. We are so sorry it has taken us this long to share an update of our lives. We would love to hear from our friends from the International House. Please write us at "email address" or "email address" and let us know how you are doing.
Best Regards,
Jill, Runi and Austin"
